Connolly Cup finalists unveiled - Buffalo News

Who will win this year’s Connolly Cup as the top football player in Western New York?

The lengthy list of season-long nominees has been whittled down to 10, as ADPRO Sports announced the finalists for the prestigious honor. St. Francis and South Park each have two of the finalists.

The Connolly Cup will be awarded during the annual banquet ceremony at Ilio DiPaolo’s Restaurant on Dec. 7.

The finalists are quarterback Jake Ritts and running back Xzavier Janczylik of St Francis, running back/linebacker Keith Jackson and defensive end/running back Marqwan Fluitt of South Park, running back Anthony McCarley of Amherst, running back D’Jae Perry of Bennett, linebacker/fullback C.J. Ozolins of Canisius, receiver/quarterback/defensive back Joe Carlson of Starpoint, running back/linebacker Tywon Wright of Southwestern and receiver/linebacker Micah Brown of St Joe’s.

Ritts, a junior and only repeat finalist from last year, has passed for 2,195 yards and 27 touchdowns. Janczylik has rushed for 1,133 yards and scored 19 total touchdowns -- 14 via the run.

Jackson has scored a total of 19 touchdowns -- 10 rushing -- for unbeaten Section VI Class A champion South Park. Fluitt has recorded 19 sacks for the Sparks.

Perry rushed for more than 1,000 yards for Bennett before suffering what turned out to be a season-ending injury early in the Tigers' Section VI Class AA quarterfinal.

McCarley averaged 9.3 yards per carry and scored 11 of his 16 touchdowns rushing.

Ozolins has been a tackling machine for a Canisius team that has dealt with a couple injuries at linebacker. The senior has 111, more than double the next closest Crusader in total tackles (51). He also has seen time at fullback.

Brown did a little bit of everything for St. Joe's -- seeing time at quarterback, receiver, running back and safety. He passed for two touchdowns, rushed for four and caught one. He made 40 tackles and led the Maruaders in kick and punt return yardage.

Carlson also did a bit of everything for Starpoint. He moved from receiver to quarterback when sophomore Carson Marcus suffered a season-ending injury. Carlson caught nine touchdowns, rushed for four, passed for one and returned a pick-six during Starpoint's homecoming win.

Wright, who matched a sectional final record with five touchdowns in last week's Class C win over Wilson, has rushed for 1,252 yards and 20 touchdowns for Southwestern. He also has two TD catches and 33 tackles (12 for losses) and four sacks on defense.
