What to know about the 2019 World Cup ski event at Killington - Burlington Free Press

The World Cup is on its way back to the Green Mountains.

For the fourth season in a row, the top female skiers from around the globe will descend on Vermont for the FIS World Cup circuit's Killington Cup event on Thanksgiving Weekend.

Event organizers expect tens of thousands of fans to turn up at the state's largest resort from Friday to Sunday for what's become one of the most popular weekends on the international ski calendar.

Here's a guide to what fans should know for Thanksgiving week:

Will Mikaela Shiffrin be there?

The face of American skiing is poised to defend her Killington Cup slalom crown for a fourth time.

The 24-year-old Colorado native, a product of Vermont's Burke Mountain Academy, is expected to return as the big draw in the women's World Cup circuit's best-attended event — the 2018 event set a record with roughly 40,000 spectators.

Shiffrin is coming off of yet another dominant season in 2018-19. She topped the podium in four different disciplines as she won a record 17 World Cup races. She nabbed the FIS overall titles in slalom, giant slalom and super-G, and became the first to win World Championship gold in both the slalom and super-G.

Shiffrin has already won 60 World Cup races in her career, including 40 slaloms, which matches the record of Ingemar Stenmark. The Swedish legend owns more World Cup victories (86) than any other skier.

When and where are the races?

It's OK if you ask for directions to the Killington Cup and someone says, "Follow the signs to Superstar." They're not messing with you by making a reference to Shiffrin, though she'll be there too.

Superstar is actually Killington's centerpiece trail — last year's season stretched some 211 days, ending in late May, according to the resort. The famed run will again host both of this year's races, the GS on Saturday and the slalom on Sunday.

Racing begins both days at 9:45 a.m.

How much are tickets?

A wide spectrum of ticket prices, including several new options, allow for a range of viewing experiences.

As in previous years, free viewing is possible on a first-come, first-serve basis in the general-admission areas at the bottom of and alongside the race course. There, spectators will be able to see about 35 percent of the run and have two video boards that will allow all to see the race top-to-bottom.

Paid ticket options range from $40 for a reserved grandstand spot on Sunday to as much as $550 for VIP tickets on Saturday.

More info on paid ticket options is available on the event's website. Tickets can be purchased via that page as well.

Where should we park?

Free parking and shuttle services are available from several locations. Shuttle service begins at 6:30 a.m. at each location and runs every 15 to 20 minutes until 6 p.m.

Places to park include:

• Snowshed Lodge (Address: 3861 Killington Road, Killington, VT)

• Ramshead Lodge (Address: 3880 Killington Road, Killington, VT)

• Skyeship Gondola Park and Ride (7428 Route 4, Killington, VT)

• Pico Mountain Park and Ride (73 Alpine Drive, Mendon, VT)

• Killington Access Road (Locations: The Pickle Barrel, The Wobbly Barn, The Foundry)

Spectators driving to Killington for the event are encouraged to park and ride from either Skyeship or Pico. Additionally, guests staying on the Killington Access Road can use the access road shuttle.

Preferred parking passes for the resort's Vale lots may still be available for Sunday's action — Saturday's allotment already sold out. Those are $20 and available on the event's website.

Spectators are encouraged to arrive early in case weather or traffic conditions wreak havoc on the existing timetables. More detailed information about parking is available at https://bit.ly/2D0140M.

Will this year's event be on TV?

Yes! Portions of each day's action will be broadcast nationally.

Anybody who can't make the event and wants to watch from the comfort of their homes can catch the final runs of Saturday's giant slalom live on NBC Sports Network from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and catch the tape delay from 2:30 to 3:30 on NBC.

Sunday's slalom finals will air live on NBC between 12:30 and 2 p.m.

What else is in store?

The biggest weekend in skiing on the East Coast will also feature plenty of ski-free attractions.

On Friday, the festival village opens its gates at 2 p.m. with live music, autograph signings, the pre-race bib presentation at 5:45 p.m. and a fireworks show to cap the night. Local athletes will be handing the top 15 ranked giant slalom competitors their bibs.

For the weekend, the village opens at 7 a.m.

On Saturday, DJ Logic will perform following the opening GS runs, roughly 11:15 a.m., and Vermont native Grace Potter will take the stage after the second runs and awards, around 2:30 p.m., according to event organizers. The premiere of Warren Miller's new film "Timeless" will happen at 7 p.m. at the Snowshed base lodge.

On Sunday, Twiddle, the jam band that formed at nearby Castleton University in 2004, is slated to perform live at around 11:30 a.m. following the first slalom runs. Like Saturday, an opening parade will take place at 9 a.m. at the bottom of the race course.
