Saginaw Spirit’s Stanley Cup two-day tour reaches hockey fans of all ages - MLive.com

SAGINAW, MI – The Stanley Cup Christmas Tour was a bonus for the Saginaw Spirit.

So the Spirit took advantage of the opportunity, taking the Stanley Cup on a two-day tour that will finish with an appearance at The Dow Event Center with former Saginaw Spirit and St. Louis Blues forward Chris Thorburn.

“Every player on the Stanley Cup-winning team gets the Cup for one day, and Chris had it for a day this summer, but it was very low-key,” Saginaw Spirit president Craig Goslin said. “When we had the opportunity to host the Cup for two days, we wanted to give fans of all ages a chance to see it.”

The tour started at 2 p.m. Friday with a stop at the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena, where the Junior Spirit and other Saginaw-area youth hockey players had a chance to take a picture with the Cup, with freewill donations going toward a new Zamboni for the arena.

The Cup followed with stops at Causley Trucking for senior hockey players, Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw and then to a dinner at Old City Hall in Bay City for the Saginaw Spirit-sponsored Spirit Warriors hockey team of wounded veterans.

“We wanted to give hockey fans of all ages, of all circumstances, of all perspectives a chance to see the Cup and get their pictures taken with it,” Goslin said. “There’s something about the Cup that gets every hockey fan excited. When they see the Cup, you can watch their reaction. It really is incredible.”

The Cup’s tour will continue Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. stop in Midland at Garber Chevrolet for Midland youth hockey teams before finishing the tour at the Saginaw Spirit game Saturday night.

For $20, fans receive an autographed photo of Thorburn, along with a chance to take a photo with Thorburn and the Stanley Cup. The money will go to the United Way and the Saginaw Spirit Charitable Foundation.
