MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Meridian's "Go Cup" Ordinance is in effect as of Jan. 30. It allows
dining establishments to offer open containers for patrons who wish to finish their beverage outside of restaurants or bars within the designated district.
The Meridian Go Cup District is located in the heart of downtown.
“The Go Cup Ordinance is designed to encourage economic growth and tourism in our city," said Mayor Percy Bland. "It’s an opportunity for people to visit and stroll through our beautiful downtown while enjoying a beverage purchased from participating businesses.”
Here are guidelines on how it works:
• Patrons are required to go inside of a restaurant or bar to purchase a beverage. Leaving the site with a drink in hand is allowed, as long as it is done within the boundaries of the Meridian Go Cup District. This district is considered the “walkable” business district in downtown Meridian. Detailed maps outlining the Meridian Go Cup District will be available at participating downtown businesses and restaurants.
• Days and times of the district are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. until 11 p.m., and during specially permitted events.
• Only one (plastic, 16 oz. or less) container will be issued per guest over the age of 21. Beverages must be in the approved cup provided by the establishment.
• Please finish your beverage before entering another participating establishment.
• Use of an approved open container is NOT allowed when operating a motorized or non-motorized vehicle, either inside or outside of the Go Cup District. All other applicable laws apply.
• Please don’t drink and drive!
In 2016, House Bill 1223 was signed into law, which authorized certain municipalities in the state to establish recreation and leisure districts. Other cities with established recreation and leisure districts include Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Hattiesburg, Laurel, Ridgeland, Vicksburg, Natchez, Clinton and Cleveland.
