Letter | Cup surcharge decision not good for public health - Santa Cruz Sentinel

I am wondering what motivated our Board of Supervisors to institute a 25 cent surcharge on disposable cups and what will the money be used for? Business have a responsibility to provide a safe product for the public they serve and subsequently must be able to say “NO” when unsanitary conditions exist. I have seen well-intentioned people bring their dirty mason jars to the meat market where the butcher behind the counter, fill them using the utensils in the case and without gloves. I am not sure this decision is good for the public’s health. May I suggest that the surcharge be used to install a washing station at the businesses required to collect it.

Or, were the Supervisors thinking about our near-full Buena Vista Dump? Unfortunately, we missed that opportunity when the county allowed suitcases, golf clubs, ice chests and other large non-biodegradable items into the dump.
