NEWARK — It took two decades but Petr Sykora finally got his lap with the Stanley Cup.
The New Jersey Devils honored the 2000 Stanley Cup championship team Saturday night at Prudential Center, ahead of facing the Dallas Stars, the same team they defeated 20 years ago for their second Cup.

Sykora was injured in the decisive Game 6, sent to a Dallas area hospital after a scary hit by Derian Hatcher. The Devils took the Cup to the hospital to celebrate and his Czech countryman Patrik Elias wore his jersey in the locker room. But still, Sykora missed out on one of hockey’s most meaningful traditions.
At least until Saturday night. After introducing nearly the entire 2000 team, including coach Larry Robinson and former general manager/current Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello in an on-ice, red carpet ceremony, Sykora surprised the crowd by skating out with the Cup.
It was long overdue, but better late than never.
