The last three MLS Cup champions are moving on to the Conference Semifinals of the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs: the Seattle Sounders (2016 champs), Toronto FC (2017 MLS Cup winners) and Atlanta United (defending 2018 champs) after the Round One postseason matches played on Saturday night.
Here's how the Conference Semifinals are shaping up based on the results thus far:
Eastern Conference Semifinals
No. 1 NYCFC vs. No. 4 Toronto FC
Wednesday, October 23 (7 pm ET on FS1, FOX Deportes, TSN, TVAS)
There is playoff history between NYCFC and Toronto FC but the memories aren't fond ones for the Cityzens.
In 2016, the Reds annihilated NYCFC 7-0 on aggregate over two legs with a 2-0 home win followed by a resounding 5-0 triumph at Yankee Stadium in the second leg.
The all-time regular season story tips in favor of NYCFC at 4W-2L-5D with an undefeated 2W-0L-4D home record in New York City.
No. 2 Atlanta United vs. No. 3 Philadelphia Union / No. 6 NY Red Bulls
Thursday, October 24 (8 pm ET on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, TSN, TVAS)
Here's how the Five Stripes have fared against both potential opponents who will meet on Sunday at Talen Energy Stadium (3 pm ET on FS1, FOX Deportes, TSN, TVAS) for the right to travel to take on Josef Martinez & Co. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
vs. RBNY: Atlanta and RBNY met in a memorable two-leg 2018 Eastern Conference Final with Atlanta claiming an MLS Cup berth on their way to winning the league title. They claimed a 3-0 victory at home in the first leg, with RBNY taking a 1-0 win in the return leg. But Atlanta still don't have a win against RBNY in the regular season going 0W-4L-2D all-time in six matches since joining the league in 2017 (including 0W-2L-1D vs. RBNY in Atlanta).
vs. PHI: Atlanta have never met Philly in the postseason and they have a decided advantage in the regular season: 3W-1L-2D all-time (2W-0L-1D at home against the Union). But that first victory for the Union came in their last meeting on August 31 in front of a passionate sellout crowd in Philly. Final result: 3-1.
Western Conference Semifinals
No. 2 Seattle Sounders vs. No. 3 RSL / No. 6 Portland Timbers
Wednesday, October 23 (10:00 pm ET on FS1, FOX Deportes, TSN, TVAS)
Will it be a Cascadia Rivalry match in the West Conference Semis or will it be a No. 2 vs. No. 3 heavyweight battle against Real Salt Lake? The Sounders are through to the Conference semis and as No. 2 seeds, they will host one of those two teams.
The Sounders and Timbers have already met a few times in the postseason and they played one of the most memorable series last year. The Sounders own an 11W-8L-6D all-time regular season record against the Timbers, but it flips to a losing 1W-3L-0D record in the playoffs.
However, what Seattle have going for them is a lopsided record at CenturyLink (8W-3L-3D in regular season and playoffs combined), where the Timbers have only won three times in 14 all-time matches, including the playoffs.
Meanwhile, it has been seven seasons that RSL and Seattle haven't met in the playoffs. They went head-to-head in 2011 and 2012 with RSL advancing in 2011 and the Sounders in 2012. RSL have a winning all-time record against Seattle in the regular season (12W-10L-4D), though Seattle have won the bulk of their matches at home (10W-3L-3D record in regular season and playoffs combined).
