In the 2019 edition of the state's biggest rivalry game, Arizona State (3-5, 6-5) hosts Arizona (2-6, 4-7) in a late-night battle at Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday. Follow Jeff Metcalfe for live updates and scores throughout the night.
Penalty leads to ASU turnover on downs
Arizona State picked up 25 yards on a well designed pass from Jayden Daniels to open Brandon Aiyuk.
On the next play, a short rush, ASU's Curtis Hodges was penalized for unnecessary roughness.
That led to a fourth-and-12 incompletion from the Arizona 32-yard line and ASU turning the ball over on downs.
No score at 1:40 first quarter.
Second ASU punt
Eno Benjamin picked up a first down for Arizona State on a 12-yard run.
Arizona held after that with Michael Turk punting for a second time.
No score at 4:24 first quarter.
UA field goal miss
Lucas Havrisik missed a 47-yard field goal attempt after Arizona drove to the ASU 29-hyard line.
UA quarterback Khalil Tate scrambled for 29 yards on third-and-15 to set up the first scoring chance of the game.
No score at 7:08 first quarter.
UA defense answers with hold
Arizona State took a four-yard loss on its first offensive play, leading to a three-and-out punt of 56 yards by Michael Turk to the end zone.
UA has the ball back at its 20-yard line.
No score at 10:48 first quarter.
ASU defense holds to open game
Khalil Tate started at quarterback for Arizona, which picked up one first down before being stopped.
UA got off a 25-yard punt.
ASU starts its first offensive possession at its 40-yard line.
No score at 12:44 first quarter.
Chilly at kickoff
It's 51 degrees at kickoff, coldest for the Territorial Cup since 1992 in Tucson when it was 53 at the start.
Arizona will receive the opening kickoff.
Henderson out for ASU
Freshman left tackle Ladarius Henderson is out with an eye injury suffered during practice. He will be replaced by senior Roy Hemsley.
Early action going to ESPNEWS
The start of the Territorial Cup will be shown on ESPNEWS rather than ESPN due to the LSU vs. Texas A&M game running long.
Don't imagine that will go over well depending how much is missed on ESPN.
ASU going for fourth straight at home
Nothing is making me second guess that Arizona State football will win a third straight Territorial Cup game and fourth in a row at Sun Devil Stadium.
ASU won at home 56-21 in 2013, 52-37 in 2015 and 42-30 in 2017. Arizona’s last win in Tempe was 31-27 in 2011.
A path to victory for the Wildcats would include a balanced offensive attack like what UCLA put together against ASU. The Bruins had 217 yards rushing and 176 passing, dominating through three quarter 42-10 before the Sun Devils make it a respectable with a 22-0 fourth quarter.
ASU’s defense had another bad quarter at the outset against USC on Nov. 9 with that damage primarily done through the air. The Sun Devils came back from 28-3 down to lose by five (31-26) to USC, fell a two-point conversion short at Oregon State (35-34) then finally played 3 ½ solid quarters last week in a 31-28 upset of then No. 6 Oregon.
I’m expecting ASU’s defense to build off last week and make UA one dimensional enough for a Sun Devil win. But that could change should Khalil Tate (if he plays extensively at quarterback) and J.J. Taylor get the UA running game cranked up, leading to that balance even if it requires alternating QBs.
UA leads the oldest college football rivalry trophy game 49-42-1. I think the Sun Devils edge a bit closer tonight in what is expected to be one of the coldest Territorial Cups.
I’m still going with ASU 38, Arizona 24.
