What’s Coming at the Breeders’ Cup - The New York Times

Most sports fans pay attention to the Triple Crown. But the hard-core horse racing aficionados love the Breeders’ Cup, 14 elite races with the best of the best thoroughbreds. Here’s what to expect this year.

There are five races for 2-year-olds on Friday, but the big ones are all on Saturday, starting at 2:55 p.m. Eastern. The $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic is at 8:44 p.m. For the first time in three years, the event comes to Santa Anita Park in Southern California.

Unfortunately, for the wrong reasons. A series of deaths of horses caused the track to be shut for three weeks in February. As recently as Sunday, another horse died after a race. Gov. Gavin Newsom of California has said that horse racing could be out of business in his state if things don’t improve.

The good news is that wildfires in the area are not expected to affect the races.

Not many. Maximum Security, who crossed the line first in the Kentucky Derby, only to be disqualified, had a bout of colic, then ran in (and won) a lesser race in New York instead of coming to the Cup. Country House, who earned the Derby victory after Maximum Security’s disqualification has not run since. Nor has the Belmont Stakes winner, Sir Winston.

Preakness winner War of Will is at the Cup, running in the Classic. But he is 0-for-3 since that race and is a big long shot on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the supermare Enable, who won the prestigious Arc de Triomphe in France and the Breeders’ Cup Turf last season, won’t be back. She finished second in the Arc this year and now will be rested for a return in 2020.

Anthony van Dyck, the English Derby winner, is the biggest name from overseas. He’ll be a contender in the Turf.

In the Classic, it’s McKinzie, the Whitney winner, followed by Code of Honor, the Travers winner. But the closest to a sure thing may be Midnight Bisou in the Distaff. She is seven-for-seven this year with three Grade 1 wins.

Most of the attention in the Turf is going to Anthony van Dyck and Bricks and Mortar, who has won six in a row. But what about Arklow, who comes off a nice win the Turf Classic at Belmont and is a tasty 12-1 on the morning line?

Covfefe, named after a mysterious word used in a tweet by President Trump in 2017. And she could very well win the Filly and Mare Sprint.
