Yes, you can probably recycle your K-cup pods. Here's how.
While the K-Cup packaging is recyclable, the pods themselves seem wasteful. Now, Keurig is making most of its plastic pods recyclable too.
Look for the "recycle" symbol on official K-Cup packaging and other brands. The cardboard box can always be recycled, but there should be another symbol indicating if the small plastic cups can be recycled too.
Recycling guidelines vary by community. Check your local recycling guidelines to make sure that the kind of plastic your K-Cup comes in can be recycled.
Peel, empty, recycle
Once you determine you can recycle your pods, follow these simple steps.
- Peel foil lid off K-Cup to expose coffee grounds.
- Empty contents in garbage or compost bin. Filters can remain.
- Quickly rinse plastic cup with water and recycle.
The recyclable pods use plastic #5, which is commonly used in butter and yogurt containers.
According to Keurig, the first recyclable pods were invented in 2016.
The product was launched in Canada in 2017, and 100 percent of plastic pods were recyclable there in 2018.
Recyclable pods launched in the United States in 2019. Keurig has announced that all of its K-Cup pods will be recyclable in the U.S. by the end of 2020, although many are already recyclable now.
If you really want to be eco-friendly, you can purchase reusable pods that allow you to brew bagged coffee in a Keurig -- or use a regular coffee pot!
