"I've worked so hard to get myself into a situation where I can play at the top level and I'm gutted I'm not going to be able to play in Australia in January," Murray said in a statement to Tennis Australia.
"Unfortunately I've had a setback recently and as a precaution, need to work through that before I get back on court competing."This past January, Murray hinted at possible retirement in Melbourne after opening up about persistent pain with his right hip.

He fell in five sets to Roberto Bautista Agut in a memorable first-round clash at the season’s first major, before undergoing a successful resurfacing procedure. He later returned in June, immediately winning the Queen’s Club doubles crown with Feliciano Lopez, and went on to capture October’s Antwerp singles title over Stan Wawrinka.
If the revised timeline holds up and Murray increases his fitness to a desired level, the three-time major champion intends to begin his 16th year on tour at the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier, France. He is currently ranked No. 125.
