The second phase of round robin ties has ended, with each of the 24 competing countries having contested their second ATP Cup fixtures. With Serbia confirming its place alongside Australia in the Final Eight and more Video Review decisions, Day 4 gave fans plenty to talk about across Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.
Here are 10 of the biggest takeaways from Day 4:
1) Serbia Qualifies: Serbia became the second country to book its place in the Final Eight, winning Group A to join Australia in Sydney from 9-12 January. Six places remain available for the Final Eight, with two days of group stage ties remaining.
2) Djokovic Doubles Up: After saving all nine break points he faced to defeat Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2, Novak Djokovic joined forces with Viktor Troicki to overcome Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-3 and secure a 2-1 tie victory for Serbia. Benoit Paire had given France a 1-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4 victory against Dusan Lajovic.
3) Video Review Success: Video Review has provided clarity to a number of judgements calls in the opening four days. From Novak Djokovic’s encroachment to Dodig’s no-look winner, the technology aided officials and gave fans a better understanding of umpiring decisions on Day 4.
4) Superb Spain: Once again, Spain’s singles stars Rafael Nadal and Roberto Bautista Agut produced their best tennis at RAC Arena. Bautista Agut started with an emphatic 6-1, 6-2 victory against Franco Rocadelli, before Nadal sealed the tie with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Pablo Cuevas.
5) Austria Triumphs: After falling to Croatia in its opening tie, Austria responded well to defeat Argentina 3-0. Dennis Novak recorded his second-best win by FedEx ATP Ranking, defeating World No. 25 Guido Pella 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Dominic Thiem recovered well from his Day 2 loss to Borna Coric to establish an unassailable 2-0 tie advantage, overcoming Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 7-6(3)

7) Dodig’s Magic Moment: During his doubles win alongside Nikola Mektic, Ivan Dodig hit a shot that brought the crowd at Ken Rosewall Arena to its feet and left Team Poland calling for a Video Review. As Hubert Hurkacz hit a backhand volley towards the 35-year-old from close range, Dodig turned his back to the court and swung his racquet in the hope of making a connection. The ball, which was proven not to touch Dodig’s hand during the swing, looped over Hurkacz and Lukasz Kubot for a winner.
8) Moving To 2-0: Dodig and Mektic raced past Hurkacz and Kubot 6-2, 6-1 in a decisive doubles clash to earn Croatia its second win in as may ties. Marin Cilic began the tie with a 7-6(8), 6-4 triumph against Kacper Zuk, before Hurkacz defeated Coric 6-2, 6-2 to level the score.
9) Japanese Joy: For the second straight tie, Japan sweeped its singles matches. Go Soeda beat Aleksandre Metreveli 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, before Yoshihito Nishioka increased Japan’s chances of a Final Eight spot with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Nikoloz Basilashvili.
10) Up And Running: South Africa claimed straight-sets singles wins to move past Chile at Pat Rafter Arena. After Lloyd Harris defeated Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 6-4, Kevin Anderson beat Cristian Garin 6-0, 6-3 to confirm the tie victory.
